Kasulu Town Council forms part of Kigoma District, which is the region in the westernmost part of the Republic of Tanzania. Kasulu City Council is a new local government body established with effect from 1 July 2011 by a parliamentary letter signed in Dodoma on 19 April 2012 under Local Government (Urban Authorities) ACT (Cap 288). Kasulu City Council covers a total area of 878.8 km² approximately 11.5% of the total area of Kasulu District. The main ethnic group is the Ha tribe followed by the Chaga and Haya who migrated for commercial activities.
Kasulu Town Council is located in northwest Tanzania, near the international border with the Republic of Burundi. The city is located in the center of Kasulu District, Kigoma District. It is located about 78 kilometers (48 mi), by road, northeast of Kigoma, the location of the regional headquarters. Kasulu is located about 800 kilometers (500 mi), by road, northwest of Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania. The coordinates for the city of Kasulu are: 4°34′ 48.00″S, 30°6′ 0.00″E (Latitude: 4.5800; Longitude: 30.1000).
As of 1988, the town’s population was estimated at 19,324. [3] According to the 2012 national census, the city of Kasulu had a population of 208,244, and in 2015 also the population was 224,880, while the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) estimated 229,218 and 234,783 in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
