Handeni District Council is one of the 10 districts of Tanga Region in Tanzania. It is bordered to the west by the Kilindi District and the Handeni Urban District, to the north by the Korogwe District, to the east by the Pangani District, and to the south by the Pwani Region. It split in 2002 form the Kilindi District. The administrative capital of the district is Handeni town.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Handeni District was 248,633.
According to the 2012 census, the population had increased to: 276,646.
Handeni District Council is located in the southern part of Tanga region with fibers
latitude 40 9 ’- 60 0’ south of the equator and longitude 360 8 ’- 380 5’ east
‘‘ Greenwich ’’. To the east Handeni District is bordered by Districts
Pangani and Muheza, on the North side bordering Korogwe Districts and
Simanjiro, on the west side borders the Kilindi District and on the South side
it borders Bagamoyo District.
Handeni District Council has an area of 6,453 Square Kilometers
(Ha.637,925.15). This area is equivalent to 23.59 percent of the total area of Tanga Region
DISTRICT (PHYSICAL FEATURES) AND CLIMATE:
In general, HANDENI District Council is divided into two main Zones
they are: –
(i) Higher Belt (A few hills and hills):
This belt is made up of scattered mountain ranges and mountain peaks
whose elevation is from 600 meters to 1,200 meters from Equilibrium
Sea and occupied about 75 percent (4,839.75 km2) of the total area
Handeni District Council. The average volume of 800 mm – 1000 mm
rainfall is found in this Belt for a year.
(ii) Plains Belt:
This zone has an elevation between 200 Meters to 400 Meters from Equilibrium
Oceans with an average annual rainfall is 800 – 1,400 mm. The belt is wide
about 25% (1,613.25km2) of the total area of the Council.
Overall the District receives temperatures of 270C to 390C degrees for the three main seasons
(i) Summer season (From December – March)
(ii) Rainy Season (From April to May)
(iii) Winter Season (June – September).
1.2 SYSTEM OF ADMINISTRATION.
Administratively, Handeni District Council has 6 Divisions, 21 Wards, 91 Villages and Suburbs
775 registered in Handeni Rural 1 constituency.
1.3 POPULATION AND SOCIAL GROUPS:
The number of people and groups has been increasing year by year from people
73,508 in 1957 and even doubled the total population by 2002
for a population of 200,356 (99,446 Men and 100,910 Women).
According to the results of the 2012 Population and Housing Census, the Council
Handeni District had 276,646 people (137,218 men (49.60%) and women
139,428 (50.40%). Given the rapid population growth rate of 3.3 percent per year,
for this year 2016 the population is estimated to reach 315,019 where men are
156,667 and women are 158,352.
The population density is 46 per km2. Extreme congestion is alongside
highways and small towns of Mkata, Kabuku, Segera / Michungwani and Kwedizinga.
In 2012, Handeni District Council was administratively divided into 20 wards.
