Bagamoyo Port is being built in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. Work started in 2018. It is set to be one of the largest government infrastructure projects in the country. Bagamoyo Port and its industrial zone aims to tackle congestion in the old port and support Tanzania to become the leading shipping and logistics hub in East Africa
Contracts to start building the port were signed in October 2015 and the first phase of the construction project was scheduled to be completed in 2017. The project was canceled by the new government after 3 months in January 2016.
In 2018, the project got to go ahead and work started around June/July. It will be built jointly with the state-owned China Merchants Port, and will include a special economic zone. The $10 billion project is supported by the Omani Sovereign Wealth Fund.
The port is set to handle 20 million TEUs by 2045 and will be the largest port in East Africa when completed. The project is a tri-governmental project between Tanzania, China and the Sultanate of Oman. The port is set to handle 25 times the amount of cargo at the port of Dar es Salaam and will help reduce congestion at the port. The project also includes the establishment of a special economic zone adjacent to the port. More than 190 industries will also be established around the Bagamoyo region, including the manure processing industry to be launched by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman. When fully developed, the Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone will attract around 700 industries and become a strategic investment zone in East Africa.
