The National Council for Technical Education Act of 1997 created the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE), a corporate body (Act No. 9 of 1997). The Act gives the Council a legal framework within which to coordinate the delivery of technical education and training and to establish a productive national qualifications system that will guarantee the high quality and responsiveness of the outputs from technical institutions to both changing needs and global technological advancements.
According to the definition given in this context, technical education is “education and training conducted by students to prepare them to fulfill positions demanding greater levels of skills, knowledge, and understanding and in which they accept responsibility for their areas of expertise.” Thus, NACTE is an organization with the authority to monitor and manage the delivery of technical education and training in Tanzania. It is multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral.
