Keeping Your Mac’s Software and Hardware Running Smoothly

Keeping Your Mac’s Software and Hardware Running Smoothly | Looking after your Mac and keeping it running smoothly is often common sense. Just pay attention to your software, hardware, and habits every now and then to keep your Mac safe and running at its optimum.
To maintain the program, keep the following points in mind:

Keeping Your Mac’s Software and Hardware Running Smoothly

  • OS X checks for a software update once a week, unless you change its settings – don’t.

  • Dig up Disk Utility from the Utilities folder every few weeks and run Repair Permissions. If security is a concern, turn on Erase Free Space as well. Do this overnight as it may take some time.

  • Be wise about the software you download and install. Although malware hasn’t been a huge problem on Macs yet, there’s always a first.

The biggest danger in installing every software tool that catches your eye is that some are poorly written and can make OS X less stable.

  • When your internet connection is working properly, take a look at your router and modem. Notice what the blinking lights look like when everything is fine so you can tell the difference when it isn’t.

Following these tips can help you keep devices in good working order:

  • The MagSafe connector is designed to keep your Apple laptop from falling out if someone trips its power cord. But avoid balancing your books precariously on top of books, papers, and other work surface junk. And remember, MagSafe only protects the power cord. Someone can still zip through an Ethernet, USB, FireWire, or audio cable to send your laptop.

  • Do not use cleaners that contain alcohol, ammonia, or other strong solvents on your computer. Do not spray any liquids directly onto your computer. Apple suggests a soft cloth and plain water to clean displays. If that is not enough, a product called Klear Screen is recommended.

  • Mac is designed to work in a regular home or office environment. Avoid operating it in extremely hot places or exposure to direct sunlight. If you place your laptop on a soft or cluttered surface, make sure the fan exhaust in the hinge is not clogged.

  • Monitor your laptop in public places. Be especially vigilant when going through airport security.

And last but not least, if you are spending a lot of time in front of your computer, take comfort precautions. It’s best to avoid repetitive motion injuries completely. Comfortable seats that place the keyboard and mouse or trackpad at a level where the forearms are at right angles to your body are at the top of the list. Apple has extensive suggestions.
